A recent study has found that about 74% of the cancer patients have taken alternative cancer medications which may limit the therapy and could also cause harmful side effects to cancer patients.
The study was conducted by researchers of the Medco Health Solutions Inc. It was further found that about 23% to 57% of the cancer patients were provided with least effective drugs which reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatment.
According to the researchers, the Oncologists, while prescribing cancer medications to the patients, don?t take advice from other doctors. Consulting other doctors could actually prove helpful in prescribing best treatment for the cancer patients.
It has been informed that targeted cancer pills, when taken in combination with other medications, can cause serious damage to people. For the study, about 11,600 cancer patients were observed.
The findings of the study would be presented today at an annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. The author of the study, Steven Bowlin, was reported as saying, ?Oncologists are not always aware of other medications prescribed by other doctors and vice-versa, which can pose a real hazard for their patients on oral cancer therapies?.
It is actually concerning to know that Oncologists are ignoring the medications being already taken by cancer patients for other physical ailments. It is important to make the Oncologists aware about it so that cancer could be treated effectively.
It has been informed that PPI drugs for heartburn and acid reflux are the two main types of drugs which can reduce the effectiveness of cancer drugs. The study co-author, Eric Stanek, has suggested that alternative drugs should be prescribed to cancer patients which might not reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatment after reacting with other medications being consumed by the cancer patients.
