China's Shenzhou 9 space capsule landed at about 10 p.m. EDT?(10 a.m. Friday, June 29 Beijing time) in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China. To prepare for their journey home, the space crew ? which included China's first female astronaut Liu Yang ? separated the Shenzhou 9 capsule its target, the Tiangong 1 prototype space module, on Wednesday (June 27).

Their landing was broadcast live on China's state-run CCTV television network, showing the capsule streaking through the atmosphere like a meteor, deploying its main parachute, then making the final landing and rolling over on its side in a rough touchdown.

"We fulfilled the first manned manual docking," mission commander Jing Haipeng told CCTV reporters after exiting the Shenzhou 9 capsule. His comments in Chinese were translated into English by CCTV. "For the country and people all across the country, thank you for your concerns." ?[Photos of China's Shenzhou 9 Mission]

Jing and crewmates Liu Yang and Liu Wang appeared to be in good health after their space mission. The trio wore broad smiles and waved to cameras after leaving their spacecraft, but did sit in reclined chairs to help ease their adaptation back to Earth's gravity after nearly two weeks in weightlessness.

Shortly after the landing, China's Premier Wen Jiabao proclaimed the Shenzhou 9 mission a complete success.

"This manned docking mission of Tiangong 1 and Shenzhou 9 marks a large milestone, a major breakthrough for China to master the space docking technology," Wen said while reading a statement. "And also, it marks a decisive step forward on China's second step on its space strategy."

China's big space leap

China's Shenzhou 9 mission, which included successful displays of manual and automatic dockings, represented an important leap forward for China's space program. In addition to being China's longest space mission to date, it also tested technology vital for the country's goal of building space station in orbit by the year 2020.

"Chinese astronauts have their own home in space now," Jing told China's President Hu Jintao on Tuesday (June 26) during a special call according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. "We are proud of our country!" ?

And while the orbital linkups are important technological achievements for China, the mission also carried a wider social impact because it included the country's first female astronaut: the 33-year-old Liu Yang.

"It was like a home in Tiangong, and I feel very happy and proud of my country," Liu Yang told reporters after landing.

Jing, the commander, is China's first veteran astronaut to fly in space twice. The third crewmember, Liu Wang, served as the Shenzhou 9 docking pilot.

"It feels really good to feel the ground and to be back home," Liu Wang said.

Zynga game 'The Ville' lets you (virtually) get it on

7 hrs.

Things are getting hot and heavy in Zynga's newest Facebook game.?That is, if you consider some PG-rated?virtual sex to be hot and heavy.?

Following the success of games like "FarmVille," "CityVille" and "CastleVille," Facebook gaming giant?Zynga this week?launched its latest Ville game which is called simply?"The Ville."

This strategy-based life simulation?game lets players create a personalized avatar, build a home and live out virtual relationships.?And according to Zynga executive producer David Gray who spoke to CNET, the avatars in the game can (gasp!) make whoopee. Yes, whoopee.

Gray told CNET that it works like this:

...when someone is in your house and you begin to interact with them, you can level up by interacting with them in ways that the game sees as romantic. As you climb the experience tree, you eventually unlock the capability to initiate the "happiness home run," or just "whoopee"

Based on some of?the breathy Zynga?sex-related headlines making the Internet rounds this week (the above one included), this virtual sex business?may sound like?risque?stuff.

It is not.

Prudes (or concerned parents) can rest assured, making whoopee is pretty tame stuff. There is, apparently, partial disrobing before floating hearts cover the bedroom. Hide?your eyes! It's FLOATING HEARTS!?

Meanwhile, Zynga's frisky avatars are hardly the first to get it on Facebook style.

It's not an overstatement to say that "The Ville" has taken a whole lot of cues from the long-running, best-selling "Sims" games from?Electronic Arts -- and specifically from the new "Sims Social" game on Facebook. And those randy?Sims characters have been making quite a lot of woo-hoo (not to be confused with whoopee)?on Facebook for months now.

In fact,?In January, EA released this?infographic, announcing that "Sims Social" avatars make whoo-hoo?680,000 times per day. And here is the whoo-hoo in action. C'mon,?you know you want to see it:

Domestic Abuse Counseling ? Can Domestic Abusers Change ...

?

Do domestic abusers change? Well, that is the sixty-four million dollar question.

Some people will tell you, ?Absolutely not?never.? Other people will say, ?Possibly so.? Then, there are those who have personal experience with domestic abuse counseling and successful outcome in working with abusive relationships.

Domestic Abuse as a Life Condition

We often hear battered women claiming that abuse shelter advocates say, ?Once a batterer?always a batterer.? And this perspective is usually supported by law enforcement, as well.

Their point of view makes perfect sense from their perspective. Think about it. The frame of reference is typically individuals in and out of the shelter system, going from an abusive relationship to protective residence or counsel with an abuse agency?back and forth, over and over again.

For law enforcement, it is not that much different. They are looking at couples that repeatedly lure them back into their homes on domestic calls. The officers see one domestic assault after another, often with escalating violence.

Domestic Abuse as a Relationship Dysfunction

Relationship therapists see domestic abuse as a ?relationship? condition. They employ couple?s/marital therapy strategies to facilitate change in the abusive relationship.

Unfortunately, what often happens is that the dynamics underlying the abusive relationship solidify. This can be dangerous for the abused partner, as you may know if you have experienced failed couples therapy for domestic abuse.

Domestic Abuse as a Batterer?s Condition

Individuals who employ change strategies for what they see as a batterer?s condition breathe a breath of fresh air into the equation. These people understand the operative dynamics in play when it comes to domestic violence. And they are equipped with appropriate strategies to effect change for couples in abusive relationships.

This is the group of people who will tell you, ?Yes, abusers can change.? They witness positive outcome changes in the batterers that they treat.

Their interventions focus on batterer accountability and responsibility. When most effective, their therapies with have both a cognitive and behavioral component?and the outcomes are visible in the relationships and lives of the people that they help.

If you are in an abusive relationship and wonder if it can ever change, consider your options. Then, reach into your own place of knowing for your answers. If you are clear that it is time to move on, then do so with a proper safety plan in place.

If, on the other hand, you still question the potential for change in your abusive partner and ultimately in your relationship?consider your options thoroughly. Learn about domestic abuse counseling and domestic violence interventions?to break the larger cycle of family violence.

Cracking the Nexus Q, Google's 25-watt amplified obsession

"We're missing a nut," says a bemused Matt Hershenson, former Danger founder and now Google's director of hardware for Android, pointing at a vacant spot on an exploded photo of the Nexus Q. Its parts are strewn out across a white background, perfectly arranged in a linear pattern that starkly contrasts with the spherical nature of the thing. "Wow, you're right," agrees Joe Britt, engineering director at Google and another former Danger founder. "It's like the illuminators, you know, the monks who used to draw up the codexes." Hershenson picks up the reference without missing a beat: "Everybody needs to make at least one mistake. Nothing can be perfect."

That goes against everything else we've been learning from the pair, who spend 45 minutes walking us through every detail of what went into the development of the new Nexus Q. They worked hand-in-hand with engineers and designers and materials experts, ensuring everything from the bearings to the LEDs were, well, perfect. But there is one thing, something larger, that many have said is a crucial flaw in this illuminated device: pricing. Will people pay $299 for a high-concept, low-functionality social media streamer? Join us after the break for how the Q came to be, and why Britt and Hershenson think it will be a success.

Mexico City Walking Tour

The main temple of the Aztecs was only part of a much larger sacred center of the great city of Tenochtitlan, which may have contained as many as 78 buildings. This temple was dedicated to the rain god, Tlaloc, and the god of war, Huitzilopochtli. The temple went through several phases of construction, each covering over previous layers in order to make the building bigger.

Excavation of the great temple began in 1978, when the stone sculpture of the moon goddess Coyolxauqui was unearthed by electric company workers. This piece and many others found here are on display in the Templo Mayor museum which was inaugurated in 1987.

You can see the ruins from the sidewalk, or pay the admission fee which allows access to the ruins and the museum. Read more about the Templo Mayor archaeological site and museum.

The Supreme Court threw out key provisions of Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants Monday but said a much-debated portion could go forward ? that police must check the status of people stopped for various reasons who might appear to be in the U.S. illegally. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)

(AP) ? A divided Supreme Court threw out major parts of Arizona's tough crackdown on illegal immigrants Monday in a ruling sure to reverberate through the November elections. The justices unanimously approved the law's most-discussed provision ? requiring police to check the immigration status of those they stop for other reasons ? but limited the consequences.

Although upholding the "show me your papers" requirement, which some critics say could lead to ethnic profiling, the justices struck down provisions that created state crimes allowing local police to arrest people for federal immigration violations. And they warned against detaining people for any prolonged period merely for not having proper immigration papers.

The mixed outcome vindicated the Obama administration's aggressive challenge to laws passed by Arizona and the five states ? Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? that followed its lead in attempting to deal with illegal immigration in the face of federal inaction on comprehensive reform.

The administration had assailed the Arizona law as an unconstitutional intrusion into an area under federal control.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, joined in his majority opinion by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts as well as three liberal justices, said the impasse in Washington over immigration reform did not justify state intrusion.

"Arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration while that process continues, but the state may not pursue policies that undermine federal law," Kennedy said. That part of the ruling drew a caustic dissent from Justice Antonin Scalia, who said the Obama administration doesn't want to enforce existing immigration law.

A second opinion with potentially important implications for the presidential campaign is expected when the court meets Thursday to issue its final rulings this term. The court's verdict on Obama's landmark health care overhaul probably will come that day.

In other action Monday, the court:

? Ruled unconstitutional by a 5-4 vote state laws that require judges to impose sentences of life in prison with no possibility of parole on convicted murderers younger than 18.

? Struck down, also 5-4, a Montana law limiting corporate campaign spending, declining to revisit the two-year-old ruling in the Citizens United case.

The Arizona decision landed in the middle of a presidential campaign in which President Barack Obama has been heavily courting Latino voters and Republican challenger Mitt Romney has been struggling to win Latino support. During a drawn-out primary campaign, Romney and the other GOP candidates mostly embraced a hard line on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants, though Romney has lately taken a softer tone.

Obama said he was pleased that the court struck down key parts of Arizona's law but was concerned about what the high court left intact.

"No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like," the president said in a written statement. He said police in Arizona should not enforce the provision in a way that undermines civil rights.

"What this decision makes unmistakably clear is that Congress must act on comprehensive immigration reform," Obama said.

In Scottsdale, Ariz., later Monday, Romney said he would have preferred that the court "give more latitude to the states" in immigration enforcement.

Romney told campaign donors that the law has "become a muddle" and that the states have more options to enforce their own immigration laws.

Earlier, he said in a statement, "I believe that each state has the duty ? and the right ? to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities."

In his majority opinion, Kennedy distinguished the "show me your papers" provision from the other challenged parts of the law by pointing out that consultation between local and federal authorities already is an important part of the immigration system. Local and state police called on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's support center more than 1 million times in 2009 alone, he said.

Kennedy said the law could ? and suggested it should ? be read to avoid concerns that status checks could lead to prolonged detention. "Detaining individuals solely to verify their immigration status would raise constitutional concerns," he said, but he did not define what would constitute too long a detention.

A divided court struck down these three major provisions:

? Requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers.

? Making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job.

? Allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

The vote was 6-2 against making it a state crime not to carry immigration papers and 5-3 against the other two provisions.

Justice Elena Kagan sat out the case because of her previous work in the Obama administration.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said the ruling marked a victory for people who believe in the responsibility of states to defend their residents. The case, she said, "has always been about our support for the rule of law. That means every law, including those against both illegal immigration and racial profiling. Law enforcement will be held accountable should this statute be misused in a fashion that violates an individual's civil rights."

Civil rights groups that separately challenged the law over concerns that it would lead to rights abuses said their lawsuit would go on.

Even with the limitations the high court put on Arizona, the immigration status check still is "an invitation to racial profiling," said American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Omar Jadwat.

Carlos Beltran, looking for day labor work Monday in the Phoenix area, said he was glad to hear the court struck down most of the law.

"We can still be here today, find a job and go home and tell our wives we have something to eat tonight," said Beltran, who was born in the U.S. but whose parents are illegal immigrants.

With the ruling, however, Beltran said the potential for racial profiling will become worse. "I don't want to have my dad afraid of looking for a job. He has four kids. They shouldn't be afraid of trying to make a living," he said.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. Federal courts had refused to let the four key provisions take effect.

The other states adopted variations on Arizona's law. Parts of those laws also were on hold pending the outcome of the Supreme Court case.

Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor joined all of Kennedy's opinion.

Scalia and Justice Clarence Thomas would have allowed all the challenged provisions to take effect. Justice Samuel Alito would have allowed police to arrest immigrants without papers who seek work, and also to make arrests without warrants.

Scalia, in an unusual move, pointed to facts not in the record before the court when he described Obama's recently announced plans to ease deportation rules for some children of illegal immigrants.

"The president said at a news conference that the new program is 'the right thing to do' in light of Congress' failure to pass the administration's proposed revision of the Immigration Act. Perhaps it is, though Arizona may not think so. But to say, as the court does, that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the Immigration Act that the president declines to enforce boggles the mind," Scalia said.

The case is Arizona v. U.S., 11-182.

The escalating violence undermined a shaky truce brokered by Egypt on Wednesday, which sought to calm the latest flare-up in fighting that began on Monday when an Israeli man and two gunmen were killed in a raid launched from Egypt's Sinai desert.

One of the victims was a Palestinian man killed in an Israeli air strike which targeted a motorcycle near a building in Gaza City, Hamas medical officials said. Ten other people were wounded in that attack.

In an earlier strike, a Palestinian militant from a pro-al Qaeda Salafist group was killed in northern Gaza, the officials said. Israel confirmed both strikes, but denied a report a six-year-old Palestinian boy had died in a separate air strike.

The Israeli strikes followed the fiercest rocket attacks on its territory in six days of fighting. Shrapnel from a rocket fired into the Israeli town of Sderot wounded an Israeli man in the neck just as he was trying to enter a concrete shelter.

After a relatively calm period, more than 150 rockets have been fired into Israel in the past week, the military said.

At least 15 rockets were fired at Israel on Saturday, nearly three times as many as the previous day, and at least six others were intercepted by the Israeli missile defence system, the military said.

Israel's military chiefs scheduled urgent consultations to weigh a "course of action", a military spokeswoman said. Israeli authorities also urged the roughly one million Israelis who live in the south to stay indoors or close to fortified shelters.

"Israel cannot be silent in the face of the recent days' events," Civil Defence Minister Matan Vilnai said in remarks released by his office.

"We regard Hamas as fully responsible for everything that is happening in the Gaza area. Israel is acting, and will continue to act, with a strong hand against those terrorists who want to escalate the situation in the area," Vilnai said.?

Hamas Vows to 'Smash' Israel?

Hamas's military wing, which had not claimed responsibility for any of the rocket fire in the past few days, said it was "ready to smash the Israeli arrogance in response to its aggression".

Hamas medical officials said a six-year-old Palestinian boy had been killed in an air strike and a that a baby had been hurt in a separate strike near the Egyptian border.

Israel denied involvement in hurting either of the children.

Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military spokeswoman, said on Twitter that the report of Israeli responsibility for the death of the six-year-old was the result of "false rumours" and that the boy had died due to an explosion of ordnance belonging to Palestinian militants.

Another Israeli military spokeswoman said she had no report of any air strikes in Rafah, where the baby was reported to have been hurt.

Israel confirmed its aircraft had struck three militant targets in Gaza in at least two predawn raids.

Nobody in Gaza claimed responsibility for firing rockets at Israel, but a security source said the missiles had been launched by members of the Salafi, two of whose militants were killed in Israeli raids on Friday.

Israel blamed the Salafis for Monday's cross-border raid from Egypt, after which Israel launched punitive air strikes on nearby Gaza, killing 11 Palestinians, many of them militants but also a 14-year-old boy.

Hamas militants had conditionally pledged to adhere to the truce brokered by Egypt if Israel also held fire. Israel never formally commented on the deal but its officials had pledged to respond to any rocket fire from Gaza.

Cairo has brokered such deals in the past and stepped in this time fearing the violence, which coincided with a keenly contested presidential race in Egypt, could spiral out of control.

Pakistan's ruling party names new PM nominee

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's ruling party named a new candidate for prime minister who was expected to be approved by parliament later Friday, setting the stage for what is likely to be a short and turbulent premiership.

The announcement of Raja Pervaiz Ashraf as premier-designate followed a week of turbulence that pitted the Supreme Court against the government in a high-stakes battle for power in this nuclear-armed country considered crucial to the U.S.'s war in Afghanistan. The crisis was triggered earlier this week when the high court disqualified the current prime minister over a corruption probe.

Ashraf, who was the minister for information technology in the recently ousted government, was originally put forward as a backup candidate but got the nod after the first choice was hit with an arrest warrant following his nomination on Thursday.

The parliament is scheduled to vote on Ashraf's candidacy Friday evening. The ruling coalition has a majority so Ashraf is likely to be approved. The Pakistan People's Party is the largest party in the coalition.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister for failing to ask a Swiss court to initiate a corruption probe into the president's affairs, the climax of more than two years of legal maneuvering against the premier.

A senior PPP member, Khursheed Shah, said during a news conference Friday that the party had decided on Ashraf after consultations with their coalition partners. "Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is our final nominee," he said.

During the news conference, the PPP also announced new elections. Opposition members had been calling for new elections to be held immediately, but the ruling party, fearing it would not do well, was reluctant to call the vote. Shah did not give a date for the elections, but the earliest they could likely be held is late in the fall. Elections were originally going to be held early next year.

"This year will be the year of new elections, and we are going for the elections," he said.

Ashraf's tenure will almost certainly be as rocky as it would be short.

The Supreme Court is likely to renew its request that the prime minister ask the Swiss court to open the corruption probe of President Asif Ali Zardari, who was elected in 2008 following the assassination of his wife Benazir Bhutto.

The money-laundering allegations against Zardari date back to the 1990s. Gilani argued that Zardari enjoys immunity while in power and refused the court's request.

There's little chance that the Swiss would reopen the case after all these years, calling into question the reasons behind the Pakistan court's insistence on the issue. Critics say the court is taking on too overt a political role that threatens the democratic process in a country where elected governments have been toppled by army coups often sanctioned by the court.

The court's supporters say activist judges are needed to keep a check on rampant corruption and misuse of power by the government. They point out the court has also been carrying out investigations into human rights abuses by the military.

When asked whether the new prime minister would write a letter to the Swiss authorities, Shah said: "We will consult our coalition partners when such a stage comes."

Ashraf himself has also been accused of corruption allegations, relating to power projects. While in a previous position as the head of the water and power ministry he oversaw the import of short-term power stations, or "rental power" projects that cost the government millions of dollars but produced little energy. The Supreme Court has accused him of corruption related to the schemes, earning him the nickname "Raja Rental" in the Pakistani media. Ashraf denies any wrongdoing.

When Shah was asked about the corruption allegations against the new candidate, he said allegations are leveled against many people, but no charges have ever been proven against Ashraf.

The political jockeying for power likely means Pakistan's more weighty problems will fall by the wayside until a new government is established. The country's economy is in shambles. The military is fighting a violent insurgency in the tribal areas near the border with Afghanistan. In many parts of the country, residents receive only a few hours of electricity a day, sparking violent riots earlier this week.

Pakistan and U.S. relations are also at an all-time low. The U.S. accuses Pakistan of not going after insurgent groups operating in its tribal areas while Pakistan says the U.S. doesn't give it credit for the losses it has suffered fighting al-Qaida and other militant groups.

Pakistan closed U.S. and NATO supply routes going through Pakistan into Afghanistan after American forces accidentally killed 24 Pakistani troops on the border. Pakistan refuses to open the routes without an American apology.

Listing leak shows next version of Android coming 'soon'

Someone at the Google Play Store hit the big red button a little early,?it seems, updating the listing for the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ to say it would soon be receiving the next version of Android, 4.1 "Jelly Bean." The listing has since been removed, but several people saw it while it was live and, naturally, got screenshots.

What exactly will be included in the update isn't clear, but these smaller incremental updates usually speed up performance, fix bugs, and include new versions of software, like perhaps the new version of Google Maps. At any rate, it's coming to the GSM version of Google and Samsung's latest Nexus phone ? not a surprise, since the Nexus platform is generally the first to receive these updates.

XDA forum member Lil Jones first posted the information;?other users subsequently added their own screenshots, and the thread was spotted by Droid-Life. They also point out that it is unlikely to be a typo or hoax, as it occurred within Google's own store and the wording is?unmistakable.

When "soon" is wasn't made clear, but the smart money is probably on?Google's I/O developers conference, which starts next week on?the 27th. The event is also rumored to bring about a new low-cost tablet, perhaps also running Jelly Bean. Whatever the case, it shouldn't be a long wait for Nexus owners.

Galaxy S3 Review: Samsung's Latest Gives iPhone 4S Run For Its Money

Advertisements for the Galaxy S3, the new top-of-the-line Android smartphone from Samsung, claim that the GS3 was "designed for humans."

If you are a horse, in other words, stop reading right here. This smartphone gets zero stars for horses buying a smartphone. Go look at the iPhone 4S, Horse. You too, Adorable Baby Monkey.

For humans, however -- the species that makes up a surprising majority of Huffington Post readers -- I can, with all of my human heart, endorse the Galaxy S3. Available on all of the major U.S. mobile carriers for $199 on contract, the Galaxy S3 is an attractive phone with whip-quick speeds, a large, hypnotically beautiful screen and superior battery life. The camera cannot compete in image quality with those of the HTC One X or the iPhone 4S, but every other experience central to the success of a smartphone feels premium, state-of-the-art, and -- and this is the descriptor that I constantly find myself returning to -- fast.

SPEED

Call this bad boy Nestle, 'cause it's quick. The 4G LTE speeds on AT&T's network make downloads and page-loading lickety-split speedy; apps appear instantly after launch, and the beastly 2GB of RAM ensure that no matter how many power-hungry apps you have open at once, everything operates smoothly. The thing runs faster than a sophomore at Yale who's just heard about the cardigan sale at the local Brooks Brothers -- which, if you've never seen, is really, really fast.

Scrolling on the touchscreen is as smooth as it's ever been on Android, nearing, though not equaling, the sleekness of the iPhone and Windows Phone. Speaking of smooth, the lock screen lets you swipe in any direction to unlock the device -- that's neat, and a welcome change for those trying to access their phones on-the-go.

VISION

The 4.8-inch display likely will turn some off immediately. But despite the big screen, the GS3 is slimmer and weighs less than the iPhone 4S, with its comparatively tiny 3.5-inch screen. (Part of that's due to the plastic backing which -- thanks to some clever material finish -- has a polished non-plasticky feel to it.)

But about that display: It's lovely. My specs sheet tells me its Super AMOLED, 720x1,280; whatever it is, its beauty is alluring to the user. The Gorilla Glass screen might be sized for gorilla fingers, but the phone fits comfortably in your hand or your pocket, thanks to that thinness. It's not as comfortable as the iPhone 4S, of course: Obviously you are choosing between one-handed convenience and display size here.

BATTERY

All day, easily, dancing, prancing into the nighttime. Leave your phone charger at home, pack some Twizzlers instead. It doesn't touch the legendary battery heights of the Droid Razr Maxx, but as far as smartphones go, this one won't let you down.

CAMERA

Here we must draw back our superlatives: The Galaxy S3's camera does not measure up to its rivals. In my HTC One X review, I said that the One X came close to catching the iPhone 4S; well, the Galaxy S3 doesn't come close to catching even the One X. There are tons of pre-loaded features on your stock camera -- exposure, ISO, white balance, and about 12 others, including filters -- but the default image quality on the rear camera (8 megapixels) just doesn't measure up.

The front camera (2 megapixels) also falls short. Neither camera captures light or color as well as those on the iPhone 4S.

ICE CREAM SANDWICH, WITH SAMSUNG-FILLING

I've written all about the pros and cons of Android here, and those hold true for the GS3. The handset is great for heavy Google users who love the power and flexibility of widgets; it gets even better the more you use it, but there's still a barrier to entry for newer users. Past that, what does Samsung have for us? What apps does Samsung add on to enhance the stock experience you could find on the Galaxy Nexus?

Trinkets. The new S Voice app is a Siri competitor that understands even less than Siri and doesn't even spout absurd responses to your asinine queries. We also have NFC on-board, for mobile payment by touch and "bumping" content to other Galaxy S3s; I'm not convinced the technology will catch on soon enough for that to be a selling point, though. There's also Pop Up Player, which allows you to watch any downloaded movie in a smaller "pop up" window while you're doing something else on the phone. Cool, but a little pointless and bordering on gluttonous; I never found a reason to use it.

There is a neat idea in here called Smart Stay: Basically, if the front camera senses you are looking at the display, the screen will not dim. It's not an essential feature, but it does work and did not seem to drain the battery.

Samsung's Android skin, TouchWiz, is one of the uglier skins out there (I prefer the HTC Sense, for what it's worth). A simple change of the system font to Helvetica and switching up the widgets seemed to beautify things, however.

ONE MINOR COMPLAINT

The home button is a bit hard to press in with one hand.

WRAP-UP

The Samsung Galaxy S III will be available on the four major U.S. carriers for $199 with a two-year contract for the 16GB model (expandable up to 64GB via microSD).

We are at the point in the iPhone 4S' life cycle that you should no longer be buying it. Apple should release a new iPhone, with 4G LTE, in September or October; buying a non-4G smartphone at this point is folly. The Galaxy S3 is a safe bet for a well-made, fast (there's that word again) 4G LTE handset, along with the various new HTC "One" models floating around nowadays.

It's not the best device for tech novices -- an iPhone or Windows Phone is probably still best for you, casual users -- but if you are technologically savvy, are looking for a new smartphone, and are a human, you'll enjoy the Galaxy S3.

Katy Perry: I Cried Over Russell Brand While on Tour

When Katy Perry's upcoming concert documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me hits theaters July 5, fans are going to get a lot more than a behind-the-scenes look at the makings of the singer's 124-day-long California Dreams world tour. The movie was shot at the same time that the 27-year-old's marriage to soon-to-be-ex-husband Russell Brand was crumbling, and, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry admits to struggling with how to present the breakup on the big screen. Ultimately she simply stayed true to herself.

NPR intern paid for only a few of 11,000 songs

Alex Brandon / AP file

Remember buying records? An NPR intern's blog post has sparked a huge debate about paying for music.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Those who've seen music change from record players to 8-tracks to cassettes to CDs and MP3s know well that the format of one's music collection is far from permanent.

But that said, a 20-year-old NPR intern managed to strike up quite the controversy last week with her blog post, "I Never Owned Any Music To Begin With."? American University senior Emily White confesses that she has more than 11,000 songs in her iTunes library, is "an avid music listener, concertgoer and college radio DJ," yet only paid for 15 CDs in her lifetime.

"I wish I could say I miss album packaging and liner notes and rue the decline in album sales the digital world has caused," White writes.?"But the truth is, I've never supported physical music as a consumer."

She goes on to say that she herself didn't "illegally" download most of the songs, receiving some from family, friends, and in one case, a senior prom date who loaded her iPod up with 15 gigs of music. She also confesses to spending hours ripping music from the college radio station?where she worked -- apparently viewing all that music acquisition as legal.

"As I've grown up, I've come to realize the gravity of what file-sharing means to the musicians I love," White writes, but she then goes on to say "I honestly don't think my peers and I will ever pay for albums."

NPR readers posted more than 500 comments on her post. Some of them bragged about their own large music collections, while others called White a thief, or worse. Others?commented on White's dream of a universal digital catalog of all music.

One of the longest and most publicized responses came from David Lowery, singer/songwriter for Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, who also teaches in the music business program at the University of Georgia.

"It doesn?t really matter that you didn?t take these tracks?from a file-sharing site," Lowery writes to White.?"That may seem like a neat dodge, but I?d suggest to you that from the artist?s point of view, it?s kind of irrelevant."

Lowery also wrote of two musician friends who killed themselves in part because of declining financial situations, writing "there is no other explanation (for their incomes falling) except for the fact that 'fans' made the unethical choice to take their music without compensating these artists."

And in a much-quoted line, Lowery wrote, "Congratulations! Your generation is the first in history to rebel by unsticking it to the man and instead sticking it to weirdo freak musicians!"

Other readers also had their say.

"How do you suppose the creators of those 11,000 songs in 'your' iTunes library should be renumerated for providing you and others with listening pleasure?" wrote James Blum. "Were you thinking that their purpose in life was to amuse you for free?"

And some felt that those who criticized White were out of touch. "I honestly don't know what to say to all these commentors who refuse to look at a new situation," wrote Gail Madoff.?"Hello? Technology happens? Deal with it."

The debate didn't end with the publication of White's post. NPR ran a follow-up post, the New York Times picked up the story, and musicians and music fans from all over chimed in on blogs and forums.

What do you think? Did Emily White steal?tens of thousands of songs? Tell us on Facebook.

Apple and Liquidmetal hug it out, lengthen their pact until 2014

Liquidmetal exampleThe deal between Apple and Liquidmetal was originally supposed to be a short-term fling. Technically, it expired in February this year, less than two years after the couple first met. There must have been a spark, as the two have just decided to extend their licensing deal through to February 2014. Of course, simply having a deal isn't the same as putting it to use, and there's no certainty that we'll see anything exotic materialize out of it: the last time Liquidmetal's extra-sturdy alloy was used in an Apple product, it wound up in a SIM card ejector tool. Still, Apple must have found something it wants to make in order to keep its union going forward, whether it's another tiny pack-in with an iPhone or (once costs allow) something a tad larger.

Apple and Liquidmetal hug it out, lengthen their pact until 2014 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 12:52:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Miami looks to take commanding 3-1 lead in NBA Finals

Ok buddy...2 down, 2 to go.

The Miami Heat have an awesome opportunity to take full control of the NBA Finals tonight when they host Game 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. At this point of the season every game is a ?must-win' for both teams, and while a win for the Heat puts them in the drivers seat with a 3-1 lead in the series, a loss for the Thunder puts them in that 3-1 hole, with one more game still to be played in Miami.

Sure, the next two games can both be considered swing games, but it all depends who wins tonight. Miami wins and this was the swing game, OKC wins and the next game is the swing game. Either way, this years NBA Finals looks like it will be decided (for the most part, if not completely) in South Florida. Wouldn't be the first time either as I'm sure you remember back in 2006 the Heat won all three home games to take control of that series.

Star-divide

For now, Miami holds a 2-1 series lead in the NBA Finals for the second straight year, but most Heat fans can notice the difference between last seasons team and the one from this year. Being in this situation last June can only help the Heat this time around, having been in this situation before and knowing full well the importance of not letting up one inch until its over.

On the other side of the court, Oklahoma City knows just as well that the series is far from over. This is a team that was down 0-2 in the Western Conference Finals to the San Antonio Spurs who had won 20 games in a row, but came back and beat them four straight. The Thunder is also aware that Miami was up 2-1 last season and blew it, so OKC has a few things to hang their hat on.

There is one very big difference in the Heat team from last year and the one playing this year, and that is LeBron James. The league MVP is well aware that he was way too passive last season against the Mavericks, but has remained dominant through the first three games of this years Finals. LeBron is averaging 30.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists through three games against the Thunder, which looks even better compared to his pedestrian 17.8 points, 7.2 rebound, 6.7 assist numbers from last season.

James is also showing that he isn't afraid of performing in big moments. He has made several big shots and clutch free throws in the 4th quarters of this years Finals, and his team has played well around him. In Game 3, Miami became the first team in this seasons playoffs to overcome a double-digit, 2nd half deficit to the Thunder. LeBron led the way with 8 points in that 4th quarter, with no OKC player scoring more then 4.

The defense late in the game is key because one thing that has impressed the crap out of me during these playoffs is how well the Thunder's stars play down the stretch of games. It's amazing how easily they score, and it all starts with Kevin Durant. When he gets going with the outside jumper and the inside game he is impossible to stop, but if Miami can somehow keep he and his co-stars under control, the Heat should be able to capitalize on the 2-1 series lead this time around.
