'Parent and Family Engagement Summit' to hear from child experts

Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth M. Young will host the Third Annual Riverside County Parent and Family Engagement Summit Thursday, Sept. 13 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros, Palm Springs.

The theme of this year?s event will be ?Preparing Our Children for Their Future,? and will feature more than a dozen workshops on subjects ranging from preventing bullying to teaching math at home.

Michele Borba, internationally recognized child expert and author will be the keynote speaker at the event. Special recognition will go to Riverside County?s own 23rd District PTA, recently recognized at the national level with the Phoebe Apperson Hearst-National PTA Family-School Partnership Award of Merit.

In addition, 2012 Exemplary Practices in Parent Engagement Awards will be given to three programs.

The award is given each year to an outstanding parent engagement program operated by a school district in the county that has demonstrated ongoing student academic success as a result of increasing parent and family involvement in their child?s life and education. The winners are:

  • Parent Intervention Program, Saul Martinez Elementary school, Coachella Valley Unified School District.
  • Parent Summit, Moreno Valley High School, Moreno Valley Unified School District.
  • The Parent Academy, Beaumont Adult School, Beaumont Unified School District.

Featured workshop sessions will highlight practices and resources for enhancing parent and family engagement in a child?s education. They include:

Organizing an Effective Action Plan for Partnerships

Using information from the Riverside County Office of Education Parent Engagement Leadership Initiative (PELI), this session will show how to create an action plan to implement, evaluate, and improve family and community involvement.

Learning at Home: Math for Parents

Learn ways to help your child practice mathematics at home in a fun way without worksheets and flashcards. Come experience ?Mental Math? and learn why this is so important for children in their everyday lives.

Understanding the Educational Alphabet Soup Through Assessments

Information on No Child Left Behind (NCLB), standards-based assessments, state and district testing, and simple testing strategies will be presented.

What Really Works to Stop Bullying: The Essential 6 R?s of Bully-Proofing

Information will be provided about what needs to be done to stop bullying including a research-driven framework and solution-based strategies for ending peer cruelty and mobilizing student compassion.

Parent Like a Champion!

Techniques such as Precise Praise, No Warnings, and Positive Framing help children and adolescents see that failure is a result of effort, not ability. Learn more about these techniques that have the potential to change how children perceive themselves when they experience setbacks.

What?s the Future Like? Is My Child Ready?

Parents will learn about resources available to assist children in developing strategies to grow and gain jobs of their dreams.

The Culture of Poverty: Insights That Can Make a Difference

The book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, has had a profound influence on working effectively with families living in poverty. Topics will include the five registers of language and how they relate to poverty, the importance of oral language development, and important tips and strategies for dealing with families with a poverty background.

Empowering Your Child for Success Through 40 Developmental Assets

The Developmental Assets framework has become one of the most widely used approaches to positive youth development in the United States. Learn the 40 assets within a family, examine why they are vital to student success, and explore strategies to build these assets in families and schools.

?Show Me the Money?: Financial Literacy for Children

This workshop will provide parents with resources to assist their children to develop good financial habits at any age.

How Do I Ensure My Child Will Graduate?

Learn information that will help keep students on-track for graduation. In addition, presenters will share information to help parents recognize the indicators for student dropouts. Come Back Kids, RCOE?s dropout recovery program, will be featured.

Parent University

The Parent University at Home Gardens Academy in the Corona-Norco Unified School District is a unique program that allows parents to have the opportunity to learn how to become involved in their child?s education and become engaged with their child in the learning process.

Learning at Home: Developing Language and Literacy

Parents attending this workshop will have an opportunity to receive practical ?hands-on? tips, ideas, and information to develop important language and literacy skills at home.

University Preparedness: The New College Readiness

Learn what every parent should know in order to ensure their child is prepared for the university.

?Where Did I Put Those Dreams?? Career Development Tools for Students

This session will provide parents with tools to help create 21st Century career choices for their children. Attendees will gain resources to assist their children in planning and developing the career of their dreams.

Parents Play a Crucial Role in Our Digital World

This workshop will explore current issues of Digital Citizenship including cyberbulling, sexting, plagiarism, piracy, and more.
