JACKSON ? Phil Bryant's staff says he will take his oath as Mississippi governor outside on the Capitol steps Tuesday, unless weather deteriorates overnight.

However, his inaugural parade is being postponed until Jan. 21.

The 57-year-old Bryant is scheduled to be sworn in at noon Tuesday. He will become Mississippi's 64th governor, succeeding fellow Republican Haley Barbour, who has held the job for two terms.

For more than a week, workers have been building a platform on the Capitol's south steps, where governors traditionally are sworn in. Chairs and bunting are already in place.

In case of thunderstorms or heavy rain, the swearing-in ceremony could be moved inside to the House chamber.

The inaugural ball is scheduled Tuesday night at the Jackson Convention Center, a few blocks from the Governor's Mansion.
