Sonomax Eers PCS-150

The Sonomax Eers PCS-150 manages to break new ground within the sub-category of custom molded earphones by being the first do-it-yourself custom-fit pair. At $199.99 (direct), these aren't exactly cheap earphones. But compared to most custom-fit options, which generally start at about $500, like the Altec Lansing A1 Custom Single Driver Earphone ($499.95, 4 stars) and continue well beyond the $1,000 mark, like the JH Audio JH16 Pro ($1,149, 5 stars), they're a bargain. They fit in each ear canal securely with the aid of an over-the-ear loop, and of course, they stay in place better because after a short, safe process, they're molded to fit your ear canal. The process is simple and effective, making the Eers PCS-150 a standout budget option in the often-exclusive realm of custom earphones. By the way, they sound pretty stellar, too.

Design
The Eers PCS-150 is eye-catching primarily because of the bright orange audio cable, which leads to black earpieces with flexible ear loops. But the truly bizarre-looking aspect of the Eers is a contraption that you will only use once, and probably not in public. This boxy-looking headband that the earphones come attached to is the device that makes your custom-fit happen. Once the molding process is complete, your earphones easily snap off the headband, which vaguely resembles military equipment or a bizarre medical device. Sonomax Eers inline image

Here's how it works: After you lubricate each eartip with some gooey "fitting solution" (a bottle is provided), you put the headband on securely, position the eartips firmly into your ear canal, lubricated ear goo and all, and release a switch on each boxy compartment over the left and right ears simultaneously. This sets off a rather magical process that you can definitely feel and hear?though nothing is ever uncomfortable. The eartips steadily expand and conform to the entry of your ear canal.

This process is not unlike getting ear molds professionally done, but it's certainly a lot cheaper. Be advised, however: You only get one shot at this. If you screw it up, your custom fit will likely disappoint, so read the instructions thoroughly (they are simple). The good news is that, at least on my try, I was able to get a pretty good molding. It takes about five minutes.

Even if you're careful, your results are not likely to be as ideal as a professional ear-molding from an audiologist?but that's why most pairs that involve visiting an audiologist for a molding cost substantially more money. For example, the fit is looser than a custom, audiologist-molded pair like the Altec Lansing A3 Custom Triple Driver Earphone ($999.95, 4 stars)?an even more expensive Altec custom offering?or the aforementioned JH Audio line, but it's more secure than a typical in-canal pair with standard silicon ear tips.

The Eers PCS-150 ships with the aforementioned headband contraption and bottle of fitting solution, as well as a zip-up protective case. Unfortunately, there are no replacement ear tips, so if you do screw up the custom process, you'll likely be calling customer service, as there is no way to replace the ear tips with the materials included.

The orange cable also houses a universal mobile phone call answering button and microphone. On most phones, the button pauses and plays music, and on the iPhone, multiple taps skip a track forward or backward.

Performance
The goofy-looking headband used during the molding process almost looks like a gimmick. It's easy to see pictures online and feel a bit skeptical. And even though the customization does work, it would be a gimmick if the earphones didn't sound great?after all, less than $200 will get you some high-quality non-custom pairs, like the excellent Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ($179.95, 4.5 stars).

Fortunately, the Eers PCS-150 do not disappoint on the audio front. On deep bass tracks, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," there is no distortion at all, even at maximum volume?and these earphones get quite loud, so I'd advise avoiding maximum volume if you'd like to retain your hearing. The low frequencies on deep bass tracks are delivered with a definite thump that might turn off some audiophiles seeking flat response. But the overall frequency response feels generally balanced, which means there is definitely a bit of tweaking on the high frequencies, too.

This sound signature lends itself particularly well to modern pop, hip-hop, and rock mixes. Radiohead's "Staircase" is delivered with a nice warm low-end but enough crispness to let the tight drum work stand out along with the vocals.

On instrumental pieces, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the low-end presence lends the lower-register strings and percussion a nice bit of added push that might be a turn-off for purists, but adds a bit of body to the mix nonetheless.

The phone controls work simply and well, with good call clarity for both you and your call partner.

The Eers PCS-150 is not the absolute best earphone pair in the $200 range, but it competes quite well, without a doubt, with non-custom models like the B&W C5. Add in the custom molding, and you've got a winner. It's hard to really compare this pair to any other we've tested other than custom earphones?and this is the only DIY custom pair, so even that makes the playing field less level. Regardless, the PCS-150 holds its own. If you're looking for a custom-molded in-ear pair and can't quite afford the typical prices associated with them, Sonomax's solution is practical, well-implemented, and provides strong audio performance.

U.S. will lose 2 million jobs if Congress doesn't act, report says

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Automatic cuts in federal spending will cost the economy more than 2 million jobs, from defense contracting to border security to education, if Congress fails to resolve the looming budget crisis, according to an analysis released Tuesday.

The study, obtained by The Associated Press, was conducted for the Aerospace Industries Association, but it examined the shared pain for defense and domestic programs from the across-the-board reductions slated to kick in Jan. 2. The cuts would reduce the nation's gross domestic product by $215 billion next year while consumer confidence would plummet, said the report by Dr. Stephen Fuller of George Mason University and Chmura Economics and Analytics.

"If they are allowed to occur as currently scheduled, the long-term consequences will permanently alter the course of the U.S. economy's performance, changing its competitive position in the global economy," said the report.

The analysis is similar to other cautionary reports that have emerged in recent months from independent organizations that analyze federal spending and the process known in Washington as sequestration. All the reports carry a degree of uncertainty as the government hasn't spelled out where it would make the cuts.

The Aerospace Industries Association is a trade group that represents manufacturers of military and business aircraft, space systems and other technology. At stake for these companies are billions of dollars of contracts and they are campaigning hard against the spending cuts.

Its report comes amid a cacophony of election-year demands and partisan backbiting over how to avert the impending cuts that will only grow louder in the coming weeks.

Republicans are certain to seize on the dire numbers as they insist that President Barack Obama is ignoring a critical problem and is willing to make deep cuts in the military. Democrats will use the estimates to demand that the GOP accept tax increases on high wage earners as part of any alternative to implementing the cuts.

The House is scheduled to vote this week on legislation forcing the Obama administration to explain how it will impose the automatic cuts. Top officials from major defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, EADS, Pratt and Whitney and Williams-Pyro are slated to testify before the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday as they clamor for Congress to avoid the cuts.

Then, on Aug. 1, Jeffrey Zients, acting head of the Office of Management and Budget, and Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter will be questioned by the panel on how the administration plans to make $55 billion in defense cuts next year.

Unless Obama and congressional Republicans and Democrats can agree on a plan to stave off the cuts, the military will face a reduction of $492 billion over a decade, with a $55 billion cut beginning in January, three months into the fiscal year. Domestic programs also would be reduced by $492 billion over 10 years.

The automatic cuts, known as sequestration, are the result of the failure last year of a bipartisan congressional panel to come up with a plan to cut the deficit by $1.2 trillion over 10 years. The panel had been created in the hard-fought budget law passed last summer that reduced government spending while raising the nation's borrowing authority. Decisions on across-the-board reductions, the expiration of Bush-era tax cuts and another effort to increase the country's borrowing authority are part of a packed congressional agenda after the November elections.

Using the issue as leverage, Democrats have signaled they are willing to allow the automatic cuts if Republicans continue to rebuff calls to raise taxes on those Americans making more than $250,000 a year.

Based on analyses by the Congressional Research Service and other data, the report estimated that the automatic cuts would translate into a 1.5 percentage point increase in unemployment, which now stands at 8.2 percent in a sluggish economic recovery.

The report estimated a loss of 1.09 million jobs from the defense cuts next year, with almost 70 percent from manufacturing and professional and business service jobs. Cuts in domestic spending would result in 1.05 million jobs lost, the report estimated.

"The federal agencies haven't said what they would cut back," Fuller said in an interview of the domestic cuts. "They don't have too many choices because most of their budget is payroll, where the Defense Department has more choices because most of its budget isn't payroll."

Republicans and Democrats remain deeply divided over how to stave off the cuts, though various groups of senators have been trying to come up with a resolution.

Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has been talking privately with the panel's chairman, Democrat Carl Levin of Michigan, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and other lawmakers about various options to avert the cuts, including a $110 billion, one-year plan that would include closing tax loopholes.

He faces a tough challenge in securing strong bipartisan support, a reality underscored by House Speaker John Boehner's contention that closing tax loopholes should be part of a deal for tax reform rather than a way to avert the defense cuts.

Marion Blakey, president and chief executive officer of the Aerospace Industries Association, said the industry did not want to offer an opinion on what solution would be best.

"We would expect that in this situation, rational behavior will take hold," she said in an interview. She said it was imperative because the cuts only provide a short-term benefit.

"This isn't addressing the fundamentals in any way," she said. "What it's doing is driving our economy back into a recession for an anticipated short-term nick on the debt. That's all it is."

Abstract:
Currently, large doses of chemotherapy are required when treating certain forms of cancer, resulting in toxic side effects. The chemicals enter the body and work to destroy or shrink the tumor, but also harm vital organs and drastically affect bodily functions. Now, University of Missouri scientists have found a more efficient way of targeting prostate tumors by using gold nanoparticles and a compound found in tea leaves. This new treatment would require doses that are thousands of times smaller than chemotherapy and do not travel through the body inflicting damage to healthy areas. The study is being published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Columbia, MO | Posted on July 16th, 2012

"In our study, we found that a special compound in tea was attracted to tumor cells in the prostate," said Kattesh Katti, curators' professor of radiology and physics in the School of Medicine and the College of Arts and Science and senior research scientist at the MU Research Reactor. "When we combined the tea compound with radioactive gold nanoparticles, the tea compound helped 'deliver' the nanoparticles to the site of the tumors and the nanoparticles destroyed the tumor cells very efficiently."

Currently, doctors treat prostate cancer by injecting hundreds of radioactive 'seeds' into the prostate. However, that treatment is not effective when treating an aggressive form of prostate cancer, said Cathy Cutler, research professor at the MU Research Reactor and co-author of the study. The size of the seeds and their inability to deliver effective doses hampers their ability to stop the aggressive form of prostate cancer.

In the study, the MU scientists created nanoparticles that are just the right size. Instead of hundreds of injections, the team only used one or two injections, and the nanoparticles were more likely to stay very close to the tumor sites.

Cutler and Katti have been working with colleagues Raghuraman Kannan, Anandhi Upendran, Charles Caldwell as well as others in the Department of Radiology and at the MU Research Reactor to develop and design the nanoparticles to the correct shape and size to treat prostate cancer. If the nanoparticles produced are too small, they can escape and spread; if they are made large enough, the nanoparticles will stay inside the tumor and treat it much more effectively than current methods.

"Current therapy for this disease is not effective in those patients who have aggressive prostate cancer tumors," Cutler said. "Most of the time, prostate cancers are slow-growing; the disease remains localized and it is easily managed. Aggressive forms of the disease spread to other parts of the body, and it is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in U.S. men. However, we believe the gold nanoparticles could shrink the tumors, both those that are slow-growing and aggressive, or eliminate them completely."

"This treatment is successful due to the inherent properties of radioactive gold nanoparticles," Kannan said. "First, the gold nanoparticles should be made to the correct size, and second, they have very favorable radiochemical properties, including a very short half-life."

With a half-life of only 2.7 days, the radioactivity from the gold nanoparticles is finished within three weeks.

"Because of their size and the compound found in tea, the nanoparticles remain at the tumor sites," Upendran said. "This helps the nanoparticles maintain a high level of effectiveness, resulting in significant tumor volume reduction within 28 days of treatment."

In the current study, the team tested the nanoparticles on mice. Prior to human trials, the scientists will study the treatment in dogs with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer in dogs is extremely close to the human form of the disease.

"When it comes to drug discovery, MU is fortunate because we have a combination of experts in cancer research, animal modeling, isotope production and nanomedicine, and state-of-the-art research infrastructure to take discoveries from 'the bench to the bedside' and never leave campus," Katti said. "For example, we developed the nanoparticles here at our research reactor, which is one of the few places in the world that produces therapeutic, clinical grade radioisotopes. We then tested the radioactive gold nanoparticles in small animals in collaboration with other radiology researchers using testing facilities located at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital. Our next steps include partnering with the College of Veterinary Medicine to treat larger animals with the hopes of having human clinical trials, held on our campus, soon."

Katti, Cutler, Kannan, Upendran and Caldwell were joined in the study by Ravi Shukla, Nripen Chanda and Ajit Zambre, all from the Department of Radiology.

Tweet This Today, both houses and commercial places are filled with electric appliances, all of which are made to work at the same time. You have the television, the fridge, the sound system, the computers all depending on their wires and cables. As such, proper and well- defined cable management systems are necessary to install the electric wires and to keep them organised in the desired manner. It also ensures the security of the electrical data and the way in which each of the appliances will function. Such has been the necessity of cable management, that it finds its usage in several industries that primarily include the IT industry, the local area networks as well as the power distribution. It has emerged that the management of the cable networks is of special importance to the construction industry. Apart from providing enough support to the cables that move across two points, effective management equates to easy installation of the wires.

Safety is paramount and is one of the reasons why a reliable cable management team extremely important. Wiring systems that are not organised and put together in the correct way have all the probabilities of leading to fire hazards. The loose wires left dangling around the electrical appliances can easily get damaged or overheated in due course, making them even more prone to unwelcome incidents. When it is necessary to set up a system where complete re-wiring is required, then you are strongly advised to employ a professional who can regulate the cable management systems. They usually offer flexible and high- quality conduits that organise the wires and make the process of installation, hassle-free.

Though the point might seem insignificant, cable management leads to the numerous wires being put together in a better way, thereby preventing your living space from getting a cluttered look. With the wires and cables left scattered on the floor, there are not only potential risks and hazards but also a serious black spot in the aesthetic look of your house. Cable management systems lead to tidy and safer rooms and offices.

It is best to hire the professional services of the companies or retailers that promise to look after the cable management systems. Some of the most reputable service- providers can be located online, offering some of the best- quality equipments. They usually make available flexible conduit assemblies, stainless steel conduits and fittings, empty conduits, glanded conduits, pre- cut conduits and a lot of other cable management products. The services are not just helpful for residential and commercial house owners but also the data industry and the sub- contractors. Their services are preferred because of the reasonable prices that they charge.

TV habits predict kids' waist size and sporting ability

TV habits predict kids' waist size and sporting ability [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 15-Jul-2012

University of Montreal

Each hour of TV watched by a two- to four-year- old contributes to his or her waist circumference by the end of grade 4 and his or her ability to perform in sports, according to a world-first study undertaken by researchers at the University of Montreal and its affiliated Saint-Justine Mother and Child University Hospital.

The findings were published today by lead author Dr. Caroline Fitzpatrick and senior author Dr. Linda Pagani in BioMed Central's open access journal the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. "We already knew that there is an association between preschool television exposure and the body fat of fourth grade children, but this is the first study to describe more precisely what that association represents," Pagani explained. "Parents were asked about their child's TV habits. Trained examiners took waist measurements and administered the standing long jump test to measure child muscular fitness. We found, for example that each weekly hour of TV at 29 months of age corresponds to a decrease of about a third of a centimeter in the distance a child is able to jump."

In addition to providing an important indicator of health, in the form of muscular fitness, the standing long jump test also reveals an individual's athletic ability, as sports such as football, skating, and basketball require the "explosive leg strength" measured by the test. "The pursuit of sports by children depends in part on their perceived athletic competence," Fitzpatrick said. "Behavioural dispositions can become entrenched during childhood as it is a critical period for the development of habits and preferred activities. Accordingly, the ability to perform well during childhood may promote participation in sporting activities in adulthood."

Along with their parents, 1314 children from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development database participated in this study. When the children were 2.5 to 4.5 years of age, their parents reported how many hours of television during the week and weekend they watched. The average was 8.8 hours per week at the onset of the study, a figure that increased on average by 6 hours over the next two years to reach 14,8 hours per week by the age of 4.5 year. Thus, 15% of the children participating in the study were already watching over 18 hours per week according to their parent's reports at that time.

In terms of waist size, the researchers found that, at 4,5 years of age, the children's waist size increased by slightly less than half a millimetre for every extra weekly hour of TV the child was watching on top of what they had been watching when he or she was 2.5. To put it another way, a child who watches 18 hours of television at 4.5 years of age will by the age of 10 have an extra 7.6 milllimetres of waist because of his or her habits.

The researchers stress that while further research should be undertaken to establish that television watching is directly causing the health issues they observed, the study that was published today should encourage authorities to develop policies that target the environmental factors associated with childhood obesity. "The bottom line is that watching too much television beyond the recommended amounts is not good," Dr. Pagani said.

"Across the occidental world, there have been dramatic increases in unhealthy weight for both children and adults in recent decades. Our standard of living has also changed in favor of more easily prepared, calorie-dense foods and sedentary practices. Watching more television not only displaces other forms of educational and active leisurely pursuits but also places them at risk of learning inaccurate information about proper eating. These findings support clinical suspicions that more screen time in general contributes to the rise in excess weight in our population, thus providing essential clues for effective approaches to its eradication." Children over the age of two should not watch more than two hours of television per day, according to the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
